The story is about a childless couple of Hulikal village in Karnatka - Thimmakka and her husband Bikkalu Chikkaiah. In the 1950s, they decided to adopt children. The adopted children were 284 banyan trees planted by them along a 3km stretch on a National Highway.
The lonely couple took great pains to rear the plants like their own children. Thimmakka's husband was a disabled person. She had also to earn wages as a daily labourer. They dup up pits and planted saplings in them. They also put up fences around them to protect them.
The lady toiled hard to bring water in pots from a long distance to water them. They tended them well for 10 years when they grew into a forest - a home for birds. Thimmakka's efforts become truly great considering that she had to work in a quarry to earn her living. She would go to attend them before the break of dawn. Her efforts bore fruit and provide a green canopy for a 3 Km stretch. She has been justly awarded the National Citizens Award for social foresting from the Prime Minister. The trees whose worth is more than 85 crores, filled up a void in their lives.
